Following Europe’s Lead

President Obama recently criticized America for not recognizing Europe as a leader.

What exactly has Europe taken the lead on? Foreign affairs? Perhaps Europe has taken the lead in deferring to Russia (in Georgia, Chechnya) but is that something we want to follow? Did Europe take the lead in the Balkans? Did Europe take the lead in Kuwait? Did Europe take the lead in enforcing the Kuwait ceasefire? Did Europe take the lead in profiting from the Iraqi oil for food scandal? (Yes they did, which explains their reluctance for enforcing the ceasefire agreements) Did Europe take the lead in Rwanda? Did they take the lead in Somalia? Are they leading in Darfur?

Perhaps President Obama was referring to meeting the challenges of imaginary man made global warming. Here Europe has taken the lead. Europe has done more to accomplish less than anywhere else in the world. It is only fitting that a make-believe problem has engendered a make-believe response. However, if one’s religious beliefs are such that man-made global warming figures as a priority, Europe lags behind America in the reduction of growth in emissions of “greenhouse” gases.

It is only fitting that a President without substance acknowledge leadership without accomplishments.
